Personal Effects Figurative paintings with Industrial Resin by Ruth McLees
Ruth McLees

The focus of Ruth McLees’ work has always been on people and identity through memory and self-expression. Highly experimental, employing resins and varnishes as well as paint, and using unconventional fabrics, her works combine portraits with materials that add a conceptual weight or physical link.

Since becoming an artist, Ruth has been fascinated by the viewer’s perception of depth within the flat plane of the canvas, and the layering of transparent materials over a surface to further experiment with the perception of space. This, coupled with a desire for her work to break out of the boundaries of the 2D picture plane, is what led her to begin experimenting with resins.

Mae ffocws gwaith Ruth McLees wastad wedi bod ar bobl a hunaniaeth trwy atgof a hunanfynegiant. Mae ei gwaith, sy’n hynod o arbrofol, gan ddefnyddio gwahanol fathau o resin a farnisiau yn ogystal â phaent a ffabrigau anghonfensiynol, yn cyfuno portreadau â deunyddiau sy’n ychwanegu pwysau cysyniadol neu gysylltiad ffisegol.

Ers dod yn artist, mae Ruth wedi ei chyfareddu gan ganfyddiad y sylwedydd o ddyfnder o fewn arwyneb fflat y cynfas, a gosod deunyddiau tryloyw yn haenau dros arwyneb er mwyn arbrofi ymhellach â’r canfyddiad o ofod. Hyn, ynghyd â’i hawydd i’w gwaith ymestyn y tu hwnt i ffiniau arwyneb y darlun 2D, yw’r hyn wnaeth ei harwain i ddechrau arbrofi â resin.

During my postgraduate research into Textile Art at the Royal College of Art, I was drawn to and inspired by the use of paper as a material, especially the incorporation of the process of paper-making in my textile art constructions. It has become my passion.

My understanding and love of paper as a creative artistic medium has grown immensely. The range of possible visual and tactile qualities this material provides stimulates my imagination. During the creative process new images begin to emerge from the paper itself, and increasingly I work intuitively. Inspired by the texture and unpredictability of wet pulp, the final work is abstracted in imagery, minimal in content and direct in feeling. It has sprung from an idea which has captivated me. The recurring theme that spontaneously appears in my art is linked connections within a journey, often with reference to my early work inspired by distorted architectural reflections and more recently, organic forms. Repetition is another theme in my work. When making paper I am calm, centred; creating instinctively with an idea. For me the whole piece is important but so are the detailed images and surface areas. Together they create interest from a distance but also hold fascination for those intimately viewing the work closely.

Yn ystod fy ymchwil ôl-raddedig i Gelfyddyd Tecstilau yn y Coleg Celf Brenhinol, cefais fy nenu ac fy ysbrydoli gan y defnydd o bapur fel deunydd, yn arbennig cynnwys y broses o greu papur yn fy nghreadigaethau celfyddyd tecstilau. Dyma yw fy hoff beth bellach.

Mae fy nealltwriaeth, a fy hoffter, o bapur fel cyfrwng creadigol artistig wedi tyfu’n aruthrol. Mae’r ystod o rinweddau gweledol a chyffyrddadwy posibl y mae’r deunydd yma’n ei gynnig yn tanio fy nychymyg. Yn ystod y broses greadigol bydd delweddau newydd yn dechrau ymddangos o’r papur ei hun ac rwyf yn gweithio’n reddfol fwyfwy. Wedi fy ysbrydoli gan wead a natur anrhagweladwy mwydion papur gwlyb, mae’r gwaith terfynol yn llawn delweddau haniaethol, cynnwys minimol a theimlad uniongyrchol. Mae wedi tarddu o syniad sydd wedi fy nghyfareddu. Y thema reolaidd fydd yn ymddangos yn ddigymell yn fy nghelf yw cysylltiadau â theithiau, yn aml gan gyfeirio at fy ngwaith cynnar a ysbrydolwyd gan adlewyrchiadau pensaernïol ystumiedig ac, yn ddiweddarach, ffurfiau organig. Mae ail-adrodd yn thema arall yn fy ngwaith. Pan fyddaf yn creu papur rwy’n dawel a llonydd; gan ddilyn syniad a chreu’n reddfol. I mi, mae’r gwaith cyflawn yn bwysig yn ogystal â’r delweddau manwl a’r gwahanol arwynebau. Gyda’i gilydd maent yn ennyn diddordeb o bell ond hefyd yn hudo pobl fydd yn dod yn agos i’r gwaith i’w astudio’n fanwl.

Louise hand stitches her beautiful pieces from vintage fabrics, and fabrics she prints herself. She sources images from her own photographs as well as old cards, photographs, seed packets etc.  All the fabric pieces are hardened and lacquered for durability.  These are put together with flowers and balls which she hand knits on miniature knitting needles, buttons, beads, vintage jewellery, ribbon and chain.  Inspiration comes from many sources which all reflect her love of colour - a found piece of fabric, a pattern on a jug, an old photograph or her love of gardening and nature.

Bydd Louise Lovell yn gwnïo ei gweithiau hardd â llaw gan ddefnyddio hen ffabrigau a ffabrigau y bydd yn eu hargraffu eu hun.  Bydd yn defnyddio delweddau o’i ffotograffau ei hun yn ogystal â hen gardiau, ffotograffau, pecynnau hadau ayb.  Caiff yr holl ddarnau ffabrig eu caledu a’u eurliwio er mwyn eu cryfhau.  Caiff y rhain eu cyfuno â blodau a pheli wedi eu gwau â llaw ar weill bychain, botymau, glain, hen emwaith, rhubanau a chadwyni.  Daw ei hysbrydoliaeth o nifer o ffynonellau y mae pob un ohonynt yn adlewyrchu ei hoffter o liw – darn o ffabrig a ganfyddwyd, patrwm ar jwg, hen ffotograff neu ei hoffter o arddio a natur.

Hope and Benson
Hope and Benson

Sharing a love of traditional crafts, fashion and fabrics, designers Angela Hope and Daniela Benson set up “Hope and Benson” to create a unique range of handmade bags. Their handbags are made from natural materials such as Tweeds, Mohairs, Tartans, Wools, and the range they are exhibiting with us which is created in leather and entitled “Cow”. Angela’s studio is based in County Leitrim, Ireland and Daniela’s is based in Bristol. Each bag is hand cut and constructed using traditional methods in their studios. An artisan approach and the use of quality natural materials is their passion and they are proud that each piece is lovingly made by hand in England and Ireland.

Gan eu bod yn rhannu hoffter o grefftau, ffasiwn a ffabrigau traddodiadol, daeth y dylunwyr Angela Hope a Daniela Benson at ei gilydd a sefydlu “Hope and Benson” er mwyn creu casgliad unigryw o fagiau a wnaethpwyd â llaw. Mae’r bagiau wedi eu creu o ddeunyddiau naturiol fel Brethyn Cartref, Moher, Tartan, Gwlân, ac mae’r casgliad y maent yn ei arddangos gyda ni wedi ei greu o ledr dan y teitl “Cow”. Lleolir stiwdio Angela yn Swydd Leitrim, Iwerddon a lleolir Daniela ym Mryste. Caiff pob bag ei dorri â llaw a’i greu gan ddefnyddio dulliau traddodiadol yn eu stiwdios. Maent yn frwd ynghylch yr agwedd grefftus a’r defnydd o ddeunyddiau naturiol o safon ac maent yn falch bod pob darn yn cael ei greu â llaw, a chariad, yn Iwerddon a Lloegr.
