MakersXchange: Dinny Pocock

MakersXchange: Dinny Pocock

Craft Showcase

16 January 2016 until 12 March 2016

MakersXchange is an initiative where Venues and Makers Guilds from across Wales and the South West exchange the work of makers they regularly show or represent. This year LGAC has linked with the New Brewery Arts in Cirencester and we will be presenting the work of Dinny Pocock.

Dinny studied ceramics at Camberwell School of Art in London but her technique of sculpting fine layers of porcelain over wire frames has recently - and surprisingly - transferred into needle-felting. “To create a neat bird from a wilful bundle of wool seems fascinating and absurd in equal measure. Of utmost importance to me is that the essence of the subject is realised; I like to capture the moment of stillness between movements, the moment when something extraordinary might happen."

An exhibition of contemporary artists working with paper

Main Gallery

31 October 2015 until 02 January 2016

Paper has been innovating for nearly two thousand years to meet mankind’s ever-changing needs. From its earliest days it has been essential for capturing and communicating creativity. As the world moves deeper into the digital age, electronic forms of mass communication are starting to take over from paper. However paper still lies at the very heart of applied art practice with a whole new generation of contemporary artists creating new ways of making full use of paper’s unique low cost, flexibility and reusability.

Both printed papers and crisp fresh paper are used as inspiration and medium and these artist’s diverse offerings ensure that paper remain as natural, essential and precious as ever.

Ffolio is a Llantarnam Grange Arts Centre curated exhibition including the work of Kate Bufton, Angela Davies, Rob Ryan, Andrew Singleton, Helen Snell and Susan Stockwell.

Katrin Moye

Katrin Moye

Craft Showcase

31 October 2015 until 02 January 2016

Katrin Moye designs and makes hand decorated, wheel thrown and hand built functional and decorative ceramics. She uses a mix of white earthenware and stoneware clay which is decorated with coloured slips and underglazes using a variety of methods including hand cut paper resist, painting, trailing and sponge printing.

The dense, intricate patterns of her work reflects the artist’s interest in folk art, plant forms, mid century design and illustration and recalls her east European heritage and 1970’s childhood, much of which was spent reading. Her work manifests an interior idealised and imaginary Scandinavian rural idyll conjured up from childhood reading of books by authors such as Astrid Lindgren, Alf Proysen and Joanna Spyri.

Elizabeth Humble

Elizabeth Humble

Jewellery Showcase

31 October 2015 until 02 January 2016

Elizabeth’s inspiration comes from the beautifully rugged and dramatic landscape of the west coast of Scotland. She creates work that explores the land in an abstract and challenging way, unearthing details, and exploring natural rock formations hidden beneath the surface. She has developed a unique technique layering silver wires together to create intricate structures in precious metals, transforming them into beautifully pieces of jewellery with a sophisticated yet edgy tone.

Incorporating One Year On

Main Gallery

08 August 2015 until 17 October 2015

LGAC have travelled the UK to select the cream of this year’s graduates in the applied arts, searching for those who are pushing the boundaries of applied art whilst maintaining and developing the traditions of their craft. These are the makers and designers destined to lead and shape the next generation of applied artists.

This year we have also decided to expand our ‘One Year On’ section of the exhibition where we have handpicked a number of last year’s graduates to show how their work has evolved and progressed since they finished their degree courses.
